Hello golfers,

In a rain affected tournament, Jimmy Walker managed to withstand Jason Day's back nine play to clinch the USPGA Championship by one stroke last week. In the year's final Major Championship the American's rounds of 65, 66, 68 and 67 saw him take home the Wannamaker Trophy. It's sad to think that the next Major is now the 2017 Masters some nine months away!

Last Wednesday the Vets Section held their Invitation Day with just under 70 golfers taking to the course. Winning the day with a fantastic score of 42 points, on countback, were Nigel Luson and his guest Nigel Bradley (pictured), who pipped Peter Swift and Geoffrey Baldock to top spot. Richard Whitehead and his guest Clive Gayler completed the top three with their 41 point total.

A quick reminder that next Monday sees the start of August's Course Maintenance week. Although disruptive, the works are essential in keeping the course looking its best not just now, but also through the winter months.

Kind Regards,
Paul Schunter
Director of Golf & Operations

Competition news

Generations Cup

Generations CupWe had a bumper field on Sunday for the Generations Cup, which sees players from the same family play for prizes in four different categories. It was great to see so many taking part, both young and old. Winning the adult member/junior member category were Warren Davis and Max Davis (pictured), with Bob and Sophie Pullin winning the ex-junior and parent category. Eddie Bolton and James Crossett returned the best score in the junior and adopted parent section while Joe Scrivens and his father Peter had the best score of the day junior/non-member bracket with their 34 point total.

Junior Section News

There is more good news from the junior section after another string of good performances in the past week. Enrique Dimayuga continued his run of form in the Douglas John Trophy at Harewood Downs Golf Club. After a scintillating first round of 65, Enrique was a little disappointed with his afternoon score of 78, however he still finished third overall. On Sunday, Austin Gambel secured his place at the Junior European Open Finals in Spain this November having successfully navigated the qualifying round at Romsey Golf Club. Well done Austin and Enrique! There were also two junior matches in the past week, with the Fairways team securing a fantastic 5-1 win in the first leg of their semi-final against Horne Park. The juniors also took on Blairgowrie Golf Club in a friendly match last Friday as part of their five day tour of the South of England. The match finished in a 3 ½ - 1 ½ win for Cuddington, and the club were presented with a Quaich as a gift from the opposing side.
