Hello golfers,
This week sees the European Tour adopt a new format with the first ever GolfSixes event taking place at the Centurion Club near St Albans in Hertfordshire. Instead of the traditional four-day 72 hole strokeplay, a greensomes format will take its place, with the teams selecting their best tee shot and playing the alternate shot thereafter. On Saturday the teams will be split into four groups of four, similar to the UEFA Champions League football group stages with the top two teams from each group progressing to the knockout rounds. These matches will be contested over six holes with the Quarter Finals, the Semi Finals, a Third/Fourth Place Play-off Match and the Final - all to be played on a busy Sunday of golf.
It was also pleasing to see both the R&A and USGA take steps to avoid the controversy that surrounded Lexi Thompson's four stroke penalty at the ANA Inspiration in April. Thompson was penalised during her final round after she had incorrectly marked her ball on the green in round three, a mistake which was picked up by a TV viewer and reported to the tournament committee. The guidelines state that "If a breach could not be seen with the naked eye or players were not aware, it will not be deemed a breached of the rules". A further more comprehensive review of the role of TV footage in rulings has been scheduled for later this year.
Congratulations go to Kevin Hazelden on his hole-in-one on the 11th during Monday's Kirwin Taylor Fourball Medal. Well done Kevin!
Kind Regards,
Paul Schunter
Director of Golf & Operations

During the summer months two and three balls will also only be permitted in the Wednesday Evening Stableford when they fall on a Wednesday competition day.
