Dear members, 

Happy New Year. I hope you all had a good Christmas and enjoyed your New Year celebrations. The New Year's evening at the club went very well and was enjoyed by everyone that attended. For those of you that did not attend it is sure to be an event not to miss in 12 months’ time.

The 2017 Male Golfer of the Year Competition drew to a conclusion following the December Stableford and saw Ricky Hazelden crowned golfer of the year. After many successes during 2017 Rick won by a clear 16 points. In second place was Colin Forsyth. This event is one of the most prestigious titles to win as it requires a large level of consistency throughout the year. A full breakdown of the competitions that go towards this title for 2018 can be found in the club diary.

As we go through these winter months please remember that there is a “Course Status” section on the home page of the website that will be updated with any course closures or buggy restrictions. I would like to wish you all the best for 2018 and look forward to seeing you at the club shortly.

7th Hole – By Simon Osborne

The 7th tee is coming along very nicely although at the moment is a far too wet to work on.

• Works commenced on the medal tee by stripping the turf and top six inches of root zone.
• The medal tee was then made wider to the left with the spoil from the old tees from the 8th and 11th.The original sub base has not been touched.
• A quality 60/40 rootzone was then placed on top.
• The yellow and ladies tee only had the turf removed as so we could raise the bottom tee a little. Then the banks were built higher to accommodate the six inches of root zone that were then placed on top.
• The bottom tee still needs around 20 tonnes of root zone to bring up to level. Unfortunately, rain has stopped play at the moment.

The new tee is holding water at the moment due to several reasons but will not be a problem going forwards which include:

1. The levels are not complete and the water is of course sitting in the low spots.
2. The rootzone is completely compacted by heavy machines, so a true level can be gained.
3. At the moment the rootzone has no soil structure due to it being so compact. This will alleviate in the next few years with aeration practices by the green staff and more importantly by natural means such as earth worm activity, root growth and natural fissuring.
