Dear members, 

The refurbishment of the men’s shower and toilet area is well underway and on schedule.

Thank you for your continued understanding when playing the course regarding the roped areas around both the greens and tees. As I am sure you are all aware it has been extremely wet recently and it has been very important to protect certain areas. I feel the course has been holding up well and amazingly we are already nearly into February.

For those of you that enjoy following world golf, Tiger Woods will return to competition this week and Ross Fisher was unlucky to come across a surging Tommy Fleetwood in Abu Dhabi at the weekend as he came second in his first outing of the year.

Conquer the fat wedge shot

Those of you who are brave enough to face the elements and get out on the course over the winter will know that it’s very easy to hit the odd fat shot, especially with your wedges when trying to be more delicate around the greens. This can be incredibly frustrating, but luckily we’re here to help…

We’re not just talking about if it’s a PW or LW, but are your wedges suited to your technique and the turf conditions you face? This Mizuno S18 wedge boasts unique heads for each loft to improve performance. For example, a high loft like the 60 degree creates extra spin on open faced lob shots, while the 48 degree is designed to help control your flight on pitch shots.

If you think about the number of shots you hit from inside 50 yards during a typical round, it’ll become clear that if you improve your wedge play you’ll start shooting lower scores. We offer a wide range of coaching that can help sharpen up your short game, so be sure to ask about it the next time you’re in the shop.

Water in a bunker?

We know that some of you fear bunkers at the best of times (if this is you then come and see us for some lessons) but there may come a time when it gets even worse and you find your ball submerged in water on top of the sand. Would you know how to proceed?

What now?
In the winter, water in bunkers becomes a more common sight, but do you know the ins and outs of Rule 25-1 that governs where you can and can’t take relief?

Free relief
If you want a free drop, you must locate your nearest point of relief inside the bunker and drop here, even if that means your stance is outside the bunker. If complete relief is impossible but you can find a wet spot where you can hit from you can drop here, if it’s no nearer the hole, to give yourself what’s called ‘maximum available relief’.

Penalty drop
If the whole bunker is full of water and hasn’t been ruled GUR, you have to drop outside the bunker with a one-stroke penalty. When doing this you must keep the point where the ball lay directly between the flag and where you’re now dropping.

If you do manage to drop within the bunker, there’s a highly annoying chance that your ball will plug. Do you know how to escape a plugged lie? We can teach you less common techniques like this and many others during a short game lesson.
