With the US Open just a matter of days away, Justin Rose is close to showing the kind of form that saw him capture his first major title at Merion in 2013. Despite losing in a playoff to Sweden's David Lingmerth after a few errant shots on Sunday, the Englishman was impressive throughout the bag at last week's Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour.
Closer to home a playoff will also be needed to decide the McBirnie Mixed Fourball Betterball which ended in a tie at the end of play on Sunday. After 18 holes the pairings or Pam and Richard Rust and Helen and Kelvin Moore both finished with 39 points, with their nearest challengers being Julie and Chris Kennedy and Andrea and Russ Shires on 38 points. A further 18 holes will now be played to decide the winner! Congratulations also go to Richard Greaves who achieved a hole-in-one on the 11th on Saturday!
In the shop we have taken delivery of some more club logo shirts in both men's and ladies styles along with some mens' summer slipover sweaters. There has also been a lot of interest in the limited edition Titleist Pro V1's with only a few dozen now remaining so make sure you head to the shop soon to get yours before they all sell out! We look forward to seeing you at the club this week.
Yesterday the ladies took to the course for their Club Championships in unseasonably cool and breezy conditions which made the going tough for the 36 hole event. Despite this, some good scores were still recorded with Sue Hong ending the day as the winner of the gross prize with a total of 165 winning by quite some distance from Sophie Pullin who finished in second place. The nett competition was won by Katie Raynor who followed her solid morning 71 with a 76 to win by a single shot from Sue Hong and denied her a clean sweep of the prizes. For those not playing two rounds the remaining ladies competed for the Shires Cup over 18 holes. Vera Martin came out on top after a steady round of 37 points gave her a two shot victory over Shirley Eades and Melanie Harcus.
Banstead Downs Trophy
Last Thursday the club sent a team to the annual Banstead Downs Trophy event which has always proven a popular event. With four teams playing foursomes, the Cuddington contingent of Penny Rattle, Jo Cullen, Ann May, Isabel Maskell, John Gilmore, Laurie Stuart, Mark Robson and John Higgins finished the day in a commendable second place. The most impressive performance came from the pairing of Jo and Penny who returned the best score of the day from all the competitors with 38 points.

Custom Fitting
As we head into the busiest time of the year, many of you have decided to try out some new clubs in the search for some extra distance, accuracy or both! Last week Chris did a custom fitting with Ian Booker who was looking for an upgrade on his old steel shafted PING irons. After measuring Ian and getting his current club readings using FlightScope, he ended up with a set of PING i25 irons with a stiff graphite shaft which was going on average 22 yards further than at the beginning of the session. The importance of custom fitting cannot be underestimated, to book your session please click here to contact the pro shop.
Course update from Simon Osborne
The green staff are now in full tournament mode with the Club Championship this weekend and then the Gents Invite and Pro-Am to follow. Several top dressings have recently been applied to the greens. This is carried out to speed up and level the putting surface along with keeping the top layers of the root zone aerated. Sand redistribution has taken place in the bunkers to try and maintain consistency. Height of cut remains at 2.7 mm for the tournament season with greens being cut twice a day.
We have a new addition to the machinery stable which is a bright red shiny new Toro Fairway mower as one of our older fairway mowers has been put to retirement.
Unfortunately Nathan Coleman (one of the green staff) has left us for a career in property development. We are struggling to find a suitable replacement at the moment, so if you know of any young person who fancies a career as Green Keeper, please tell him to get in touch!
