Those of you who tuned in to watch the USPGA Championship last week were treated to a record breaking week of golf, with Jason Day deservedly claiming the title with his 20 under par total. This was a new record winning score in a major, with many other players such as Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose finishing just short of his winning total. Speith's consolation prize is that he has now overtaken Rory McIlroy at the top of the world rankings, a position McIlroy will no doubt want to reclaim after his recent injury lay-off. The only down side to last week is that it is now eight months until the next major is played at Augusta in April next year!
My assistant Chris Corry and Vice-Captain Gareth Jones have had many good matches throughout the summer in the Vice-Captain/Pro Challenge. Extra dates for matches throughout September and October have now been added. If you would like to play please either add your name to the match sheet in the men's locker room or contact Chris in the pro shop.
Ladies McLellan Cup

Hilliard League vs. Shirley Park - CGC drew 1.5 - 1.5
Captain's Prize and Charity Day
Entries are now open for this year's Captain's Prize and Charity Day which will be held on Saturday, 19 September. The fourball betterball event is open to all members (including five day members) and their guests with all green fees being waived for the afternoon. The cost for the day will be £30 per person which includes a two course dinner, prizes and a donation to Peter's chosen cause which this year is the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. There are currently some fantastic prizes lined up such as a three night stay at Quinta do Lago including golf and spa treatments. Make sure you enter soon using the sign in sheet on the main noticeboard to book your spot for one of the most popular days in the club diary!
Celts vs. English Match
Entries for this year's Celts vs. English match on Saturday, 26 September are now open via the sign-up sheet on the main noticeboard. The format of the day is arrival drinks, golf at 1pm, followed by a two course dinner and entertainment by comedian John Ryan with the tickets costing £35 per person. Click here to get in touch for more details.
The Generations Cup is also open for entries and is due to be played on Sunday, 30 August. The event is open to parent/child pairings. Those wishing to play that don't have a child who plays can "adopt" a junior member for the afternoon. Please add your name to the sign in sheet on the main noticeboard if you wish to play as per usual. Please note that the Family Day will now be held at a later date and not on Sunday, 30 August.
The club has now taken delivery of a defibrillator which will be located behind the bar in case of someone at the club suffering a heart attack. Given that it is possible an inexperienced rescuer may need to act as the first person on scene in an emergency, the fully automatic device gives voice and text prompts that coach the rescuer throughout each CPR cycle. Although we hope not to have to use the defibrillator, please be aware of its location if it is required.
Sign in Sheets
Starting on Monday, 17 August we will be trialling a new system where members will be asked to sign in with the pro shop before heading out onto the course. While tee times will not be available to book in advance, this system will give us a better idea of who is on the course at any given time which will help us manage the flow of the course during busy periods and to advise other members of the best time to start later in the day.
