How many hybrids should you use?

Here’s a question for you, which clubs do you take with you when you’re headed into a ‘3 clubs and a putter’ competition? These tournaments are a lot of fun and a real eye-opener into how creative you can get with your shots when you’re restricted to using specific clubs.

You’ll likely want to take a driver and a wedge with you, but how do you manage that middle ground? Do you go for an iron, a fairway wood, or would you feel safer with a hybrid?
People often come away from these competitions having played surprisingly well, and it can make you wonder whether you need to be carrying a whole range of irons around with you when hybrids are so adaptable.
Irons will give you better accuracy, and fairway woods pack some power, but hybrids bridge the gap between both clubs. So today, we want to get you to consider how you organise your bag, as well as marvel at how amazing the latest golf hybrids are.
The world of golf hybrids
From what we’ve observed at the club in recent years, a lot more players are adding hybrid clubs to their bags. Hybrids have been around for decades, but it seems in modern times they’ve becomes just as popular as long irons, particularly among high handicap players.

It is of course all about personal preference so we want to understand your attitude towards them. Do you enjoy the feel of a hybrid over a long iron? Do you find the heavier head and larger sole makes them easier to strike than long irons?
It’s important to have a good understanding of your gapping and your distances, knowing exactly how far you hit each club so you know which one to pull out of the bag on any given shot.
So how do you accommodate your hybrids into your set? Do you have just the one 4 hybrid and a set of irons, or do you have more hybrids than irons? Perhaps you have 4, 5, 6 hybrids and your irons are more thought of as your scoring clubs? Perhaps you’re very skilled and comfortable with your long irons and prefer a hybrid as more of a tactical tool?
When you visit us for a custom fitting, we’ll take a look at your game and walk you through all your options when it comes to long irons and hybrids. The very latest hybrid offerings from Cobra are sleek, they feel great in your hands, and expertly bridge the gap between your fairway woods and your scoring irons.
The latest Cobra golf hybrids
Cobra are one of the best brands in golf, and their latest clubs are excellent from grip to sole. The latest Quantum Max hybrids will help you get out of plenty of scrapes and are a joy to play with whether you’re using one off the tee or need to get some club on your ball playing from the rough.

A more compact version of this year’s excellent OPTM drivers and fairway woods, the OPTM hybrid has a large, shallow profile that promotes a consistent, predictable ball flight. Cobra has strategically fine-tuned this club’s internal weighting. By positioning the center of gravity low and back in the head to maximise launch and MOI, you’ll get plenty of launch and accuracy every time you step up to the ball. This hybrid also benefits from Cobra’s revolutionary FutureFit33 hosel, so you can set your club to one of 33 unique loft and lie specifications.
Should you prefer to pack your bag with irons rather than hybrids, the King Tec range is an excellent choice. The King Tec golf irons from Cobra have a slender design with a thin topline that looks pleasing to the eye. The hollow body construction is light and offers a softer feel on impact, while the 20g tungsten weight provides additional stability. This iron will give you incredible accuracy and workability when hunting down the greens.

With a slightly larger, confidence-inspiring profile that offers more stability, the King Tec X is excellent for players looking to break the single figure handicap category. This club has a larger tungsten weight suspended low in the head to drop the center of gravity and maximise forgiveness on off-center hits. This fantastic club offers a premium look and feel while offering plenty of launch too.
This is just a taste of all the fantastic clubs we have on our shelves in the pro shop. We know it can be hard to find the right set for you on your own, so we want to reiterate that we’re always here for you in the shop to help you with your golfing journey.
